Description
Bar Island is a less visited part of Acadia National Park in Maine. The island is easily visible from the popular tourist town of Bar Harbor. At low tide, it's possible to walk across a sand spit, the "bar," and hike around the small island. At high tide, the only access to it is by boat, ideally kayak or canoe. In heavy fog, it's an eerie trek, with massive gray seals silently surfacing to watch you pass and the occasional sailboat appearing as a ghostly silhouette in the mist.
